News - TDC Provides Support at Marathon
Saturday, April 26th marked the first annual Run for the Lakes Marathon. TD Connection members Karen Johnston and Sue Thurlow had plans to take their Therapy dogs, Chase, Ferguson and Mab out to Mile 21 to pass out energy drinks, water and encouragement to the marathoners.
Little did they know that Mother Nature had a surprise up her sleeve! The morning dawned snowy and windy. The marathon was on, but so was a full blown blizzard! The dogs stayed home in their warm beds, but Karen and Sue honored the commitment to the marathoners. They worked with Sue’s nieces, Lizzy and Jackie and two other hardy volunteers, Rox and Deb.
By the time it was all over, the group served over 300 runners (crazier than them) with encouragement, and refreshments (kept warm inside their jackets) and there had been almost 7 inches of snow in 6 hours and winds of 15- 20 mile an hour!
Therapy Dog Connection didn’t get much publicity (the banner wouldn’t stick to the wet table), but we had fun and the dogs were anxiously awaiting a full report from Karen and Sue when they got home.
